The British Barbarians

Set in Brackenhurst, Surrey, the story follows Philip Christy, a clerk in Her Majesty's Civil Service, as he visits his sister Frida and her husband, Robert Monteith. The narrative explores themes of obsession and primal emotions, particularly through Robert, who succumbs to madness driven by jealousy and vengeance. Bertram Ingledew, a local landowner, captivates both Philip and Frida, while the plot delves into the darker aspects of human nature, culminating in Robert's confrontation with an unexpected revelation about his wife's abductor.
