Old Major, the old boar, gathers the animals on Manor Farm to discuss their plight under human rule, teaching them the revolutionary song "Beasts of England." After his death, pigs Snowball and Napoleon lead the animals in a rebellion against Mr. Jones, renaming the farm "Animal Farm" and establishing the Seven Commandments of Animalism, with "All animals are equal" as the core principle. Snowball teaches the animals to read, and the farm thrives initially. However, tensions rise as Napoleon and Snowball vie for control. When Snowball proposes building a windmill, Napoleon uses his trained dogs to chase him away and claims leadership. He replaces democratic meetings with a committee of pigs and takes credit for the windmill idea. As the animals work harder for a better future, they face setbacks, including a storm that destroys the windmill, which Napoleon blames on Snowball. He begins purging dissenters and replaces the revolutionary anthem with one glorifying himself. After a costly battle against neighboring farmers, Boxer, the hardworking horse, collapses. Napoleon deceives the animals about Boxer's fate, sending him to a knacker instead of a veterinary surgeon. Over time, the pigs adopt human traits, culminating in the alteration of the commandments to "All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others." Napoleon hosts a dinner with local farmers, and the animals realize the pigs have become indistinguish
