This second installment in the Family of the Raj series continues the saga of the O'Kinealy family from Co. Cavan, Ireland. Following the first book's focus on James O'Kinealy, who emigrated to India in 1862 and became a prominent High Court Judge, this biography centers on George Morton, the author's father. Born in 1893, George began his career as an accountant before enlisting in the 11th Royal Fusiliers in 1914. He fought in major battles during World War I, sustaining serious injuries at Boom Ravine in 1917, yet he survived 19 months in the trenches. After recovering, he moved to India in 1919, joining Bird and Company in Calcutta, where he advanced to chief accountant and later married Doreen O'Kinealy in 1929. Their life in India, including their children's arrival and adventures in Sikkim and Tibet, is illustrated through letters and photographs. By 1939, George became senior partner and Chairman of the Bengal Chamber, playing a vital role during WWII, including overseeing the care of over 400,000 refugees. Knighted in 1942, he retired in 1946 but soon joined the Foreign Office in Greece. He fulfilled his dream of establishing a farm in 1947 but passed away from cancer in 1954. This account of his remarkable life completes the second part of a trilogy, with a third volume on the author's father-in-law in the works.
