Dr. Ramchandra Lela, born in 1928, is a distinguished figure in medical education, research, practice, and hospital administration, notably in Nuclear Medicine in India. His journey began after graduating from Osmania Medical College in 1949, where his idealism led him to serve in rural Primary Health Centres in Hyderabad for five years. In 1955, he pursued higher education in England, returning in 1957 to join the medical teaching cadre in Maharashtra. He served as Professor and Head of Medicine at various Government Medical Colleges in Aurangabad, Nagpur, and Mumbai, and became Dean of Grant Medical College & Sir J.J. Groups of Hospitals in 1972. In 1973, he joined Jaslok Hospital & Research Centre as Chief Physician and Director of Nuclear Medicine, roles he still holds. Dr. Lela has numerous accolades, including being the first recipient of the "Gifted Teacher Award" from the Association of Physicians of India in 1991, the first President of the Indian Medical Informatics Association in 1994, and the first President of the Nuclear Cardiological Society of India in 1995. He also served as the first President of the Society for Free Radical Research, India, in 1999, and has been on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Nuclear Medicine and the Journal of Nuclear Cardiology since 1997. He was honored with the Padma Bhushan award.
