    • The Waste Land has been called the 'World's Greatest Poem'. It is said to describe the moral decay of a world after war, to find meaning in a meaningless era. It has been labelled the most truthful poem of its time; it has been branded a masterful fake. A century after its publication in 1922, T. S. Eliot's enigmatic masterpiece remains one of the most influential works ever written, and yet one of the most mysterious. In a remarkable feat of biography, Matthew Hollis reconstructs the intellectual creation of the poem and brings the material reality of its charged times vividly to life. Presenting a mosaic of historical fragments, diaries, dynamic literary criticism and illuminating new research, he reveals the cultural and personal trauma that forged The Waste Land through the lives of its protagonists - of Ezra Pound, who edited it; of Vivien Eliot, who sustained it; and of T. S. Eliot himself, whose private torment is woven into the seams of the work. The result is an unforgettable story of lives passing in opposing directions and the astounding literary legacy they would leave behind.

      T. S. Eliot was not only one of the greatest poets of the twentieth century—he was also one of the most acute writers on his craft. In On Poetry and Poets, which was first published in 1957, Eliot explores the different forms and purposes of poetry in essays such as "The Three Voices of Poetry," "Poetry and Drama," and "What Is Minor Poetry?" as well as the works of individual poets, including Virgil, Milton, Byron, Goethe, and Yeats. As he writes in "The Music of Poetry," "We must expect a time to come when poetry will have again to be recalled to speech. The same problems arise, and always in new forms; and poetry has always before it . . . an ‘endless adventure.'"

      T. S. Eliot (1888-1965) was the dominant force in twentieth-century British and American poetry. With poems such as "The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock, " he introduced an edgy, disenchanted, utterly contemporary version of French Symbolism to the English-speaking world. With his masterpiece "The Waste Land, " he almost single-handedly ushered an entire poetic culture into the modern world. And with his enormously influential essays he set the canonical standards to which writers and critics of poetry have adhered throughout our era.

Eliot , published in England in 1969 (pity there is no US edition of comparable authority). The concordance is essentially in Key Word in Context form, with each word being treated as a headword and printed centered in a line with its preceding and following context. Within the limitations of the line length, as much left and right context as possible is printed. Provisional though it may be in the slowly developing field of Eliot textual studies (and limited in many ways by comparison with electronic texts), this printed concordance conveys its own special insights, and is far from outmoded. • This collection of poems showcases T. S. Eliot's exploration of modern life and the complexities of human experience. Themes of alienation, time, and identity permeate the verses, reflecting the disillusionment of the early 20th century. Notable works include "The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock," a poignant meditation on self-doubt and social anxiety, and "Gerontion," which grapples with the passage of time and the search for meaning. Other poems, such as "Sweeney Erect" and "Whispers of Immortality," delve into the absurdities of existence and the interplay between life and death. Eliot's innovative use of language and form challenges traditional poetic conventions, making this collection a significant contribution to modernist literature. The diverse range of voices and perspectives within these poems invites readers to reflect on their own experiences and the world around them.

In The masterly cadences of T. S. Eliot's verse, the twentieth century found its definitive poetic voice, an indelible "image of its accelerated grimace," in the words of Eliot's friend and mentor, Ezra Pound. This Volume is a rich collection of much of Eliot's greatest work. The title poem, The Waste Land (1922), ranks among the most influential poetic works of the century. An exploration of the psychic stages of a despairing soul caught in a struggle for redemption, the poem contrasts the spiritual stagnation of the modern world with the ennobling myths of the past. Other selections include the contents of Prufrock (1917), including "The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufock," "Potrait of a Lady," Rhapsody on a Windy Night," "Mr. Apollinax," and "Morning at the Window." From Poems (1920) there are "Gerontion," "The Hippopotamus," "Mr. Eliot's Sunday Morning Service," "Sweeney Among the Nightingales," and more. An indispensable resource for all poetry lovers, this modestly priced edition is also an ideal text for English Literature courses from high school to collage.
