Anna ist leidenschaftlich, widersprüchlich, verletzlich und genau deshalb so modern. Parallel dazu läuft die Geschichte von Levin, der nach Sinn, Liebe und einem ehrlichen Leben sucht. Dieser Kontrast zwischen gesellschaftlicher Bühne und innerer Wahrheit ist eine der großen Stärken des Romans. Tolstois Blick auf seine Figuren ist erstaunlich fein. Er beobachtet, seziert, lässt denken und zweifeln. Dialoge, Gedanken, kleine Gesten, alles trägt Bedeutung. Das Tempo ist dabei gemächlich, manchmal sehr. Anna Karenina will nicht unterhalten im schnellen Sinne, sondern wirken. Wer sich darauf einlässt, wird mit enormer Tiefe belohnt. Natürlich ist das kein leichtes Buch. Der Roman ist umfangreich, stellenweise ausschweifend und fordert Aufmerksamkeit. Aber er fühlt sich nie leer an. Jede Seite dient dem großen Ganzen, jeder Umweg vertieft das Bild. Anna Karenina ist kein reiner Liebesroman, sondern ein schonungsloser Blick auf menschliche Sehnsüchte und gesellschaftliche Zwänge. Anspruchsvoll, bewegend und überraschend nah an der Gegenwart. Ein Klassiker, der seinen Status wirklich verdient.

Very important: this particular edition (penguin readers) is an abridged version focused on helping people learn english. The original Anna Karenina is around 800 pages long in english, this edition is around 100. It is still very enjoyable and great if you want to get the gist of the story, but of course a lot was removed in 700 pages.
