We are not OK... Over the past decade of making documentaries, I’ve encountered remarkable individuals in challenging environments, witnessing the devastating impact of poverty, trauma, violence, stigma, and discrimination on mental health. This issue is prevalent, with 1 in 10 young people in the UK experiencing symptoms of common mental health problems like anxiety or depression, and 1 in 5 having contemplated suicide. This book opens a vital conversation about mental health among young people, aiming to challenge stigma and stereotypes. Collaborating with mental health experts and charities, I engage with young individuals across the UK who are directly affected by mental health issues, responsibly sharing their stories to illuminate the realities faced by those on the mental health frontline. In addition to their experiences, I consult medical experts, counselors, campaigners, and health practitioners to provide insights into the conditions discussed, examining environmental factors such as poverty, addiction, identity, social media pressures, and the impact of Covid-19. Through these narratives, I aim to give a voice to young people living with mental health conditions and foster understanding and empathy.
