A small coastal town is unexpectedly invaded by an army, crucial due to its port serving a large coal mine. Colonel Lanser, leading the battalion, sets up HQ in the home of Mayor Orden, a popular local figure. As the reality of occupation sets in and winter arrives early, the townspeople feel anger and confusion. Despite Lanser's attempts to maintain civility, he recognizes that true peace is absent among those whose freedom has been forcibly taken. Tensions escalate when Alexander Morden, a former alderman, is ordered to work in the mine. He attacks Captain Loft with a pickaxe, inadvertently killing Captain Bentick. Morden is swiftly executed, igniting a simmering desire for revenge among the townsfolk. Sabotage becomes common, with damaged railroads and malfunctioning machinery, while soldiers face mysterious deaths during moments of vulnerability. Mayor Orden stands with his people, asserting that Lanser's aim to crush their spirit is futile. As the occupying forces grow weary and realize the war's futility, resistance members seek help from England, receiving explosives and supplies. In a desperate move, the army takes Mayor Orden and Dr. Winter hostage, threatening execution for any resistance actions. Aware of his impending death, Orden tells his wife that while he can be killed, the ideals of democracy and freedom endure. He urges Dr. Winter to ensure the resistance continues, echoing Socratic principles from their past
