Set against the tumult of the French Revolution, the story follows Dr. Manette, who spends eighteen years imprisoned in the Bastille. Lucie falls in love with Charles Darnay, an emigrant fleeing his family's legacy, while Sydney Carton, an English lawyer, harbors unrequited love for her.
